The town of Spindale is located in the Blue Ridge Foothills of Rutherfordton County North Carolina. Spindale is a small town with charm, eclectic shops, outdoor adventure, and local restaurants that line Main street. The main street area is made up of old brick buildings that have been there for generations, giving Spindale a historic look downtown. When driving on main street not only will you see the history but the mountain vistas and pear trees.

Ride a bicycle or walk the 7.35-mile Thermal Belt Rail Trail which runs the length of the town. Originally the textile railroad line, is now an attraction of our town’s past and an outdoor recreation draw for the community. Also come and visit Union Mills, home to authentic gold panning at Thermal City Gold & Gem Mine and Union Mills Learning Center.

Spindale’s name is fitting from its many industries of textile mills and factories in the 1900s. Once a thriving industrial town with factories and history is now a tourist destination with many things to offer each visitor.

From performing arts to local music, Spindale’s arts and education are key points that make Spindale different and unique. You might find local musicians picking on the sidewalk or someone to jam with.

History of Spindale, NC

Spindale was a classic mill town from its first textile mill, Spencer Mills in 1916 until its last textile mill, Stonecutter Mills, organized by J. B. Tanner in 1920, which closed in 1999. Spindale’s heritage is rooted in North Carolina’s proud textile industry and it was once a thriving mill town that produced clothing, upholstery, and other textile goods.
