The city of Woodruff is located in Spartanburg county in the Upstate Region of the South Carolina Blue Ridge Mountains. The City of Woodruff has a small-town charm of a historic mill village along with a variety of things to do such as multi-use trails, walkable sidewalks, shopping, restaurants, antique stores, and salons. The small city is located just south of Spartanburg, South Carolina, within 15 minutes of I-26 and I-85, BMW, the Tyger River Industrial Complex, and Greenville Spartanburg Airport, and 30 minutes to downtown Greenville, South Carolina.

History of Woodruff SC

The Earliest History of this area begins with the membership of “The Church of Christ on Jamey’s Creek” dated September 18, 1787. The early members traveled some distance to attend this church. They were from the communities of Cavins, Enoree, Crescent, Switzer and even others in Laurens County. Most of the early settlers had come from Virginia and North Carolina. They were primarily veterans of the Revolutionary War along with their families.

Joseph Woodruff, after his service in the Revolutionary War, received a grant of 200 acres which would later become the city of Woodruff. Most of the people in the area were farmers. Joseph had a son named Thomas who ran one of the local country stores. Thomas had two sons, Dr. Charles Pinckney Woodruff and Captain A. B. Woodruff who made the town of Woodruff a reality. Therefore, the town was named in Thomas Woodruff’s honor. There was no town nor industry until after the town was chartered in 1874. Men from the rural areas came into Woodruff to establish businesses and the town began to grow. The two Woodruff brothers worked very hard to get the railroad to run through the town and was completed in 1885. This caused a rapid growth of business.
