The town of Roan Mountain is located in Carter County at the bottom of Roan Mountain in the Northeast Tennessee Mountains. Roan Mountain sits along the upper Doe River. Roan Mountain and reaches an elevation of 6285 feet and is the highest point in Tennessee outside the Great Smoky Mountains.

Roan Mountain has not much of a town but there are many things to do within the surrounding areas such as hiking trails, the Appalachian trail, river tubing, motorcycle rides, arts and crafts, the Rhododendron Festival, mountain music, Watauga lake, fishing, boating, swimming, the Covered Bridge, Civil War history, beautiful fall colors, local restaurants, cabin rentals, bed and breakfasts, and campgrounds.


History of Roan Mountain TN

In 1780 a group of American frontiersman and soldiers, who fought in the American Revolution passed through Roan Mountain on route to North Carolina where they would fight at the battle of Kings Mountain. They camped at Shelby’s rock which is now part of the Over the Mountain Victory National Historic Trail.

In the 1870s a man named John T Wilder, a former Union General begin purchasing large tracts of land which were a rich in iron ore in the Roan Mountain area and establish several mining operations. John T Wilder established the Roan Mountain community, and the town was named Roan Mountain Station. The town had streets, planted trees and John Wilder built a hotel on top of the mountain called Cloudland Hotel. Roan Mountain became a stop along the east Tennessee in western North Carolina railroad which was known as the “Tweetsie Railroad”.
