Skyland Resort – Milepost 42

Skyland Resort (milepost 42), is a large and wide-ranging complex with nearly three dozen structures that range from freestanding rustic cabins to a modern motel-type building with 20 rooms. Skyland offers a total of 178 rooms, many of which have r excellent views of the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. The complex has five classes of accommodations, with prices that vary depending on room size, view, and bedding. The lobby of the registration building features an outstanding view of the valley. An adjacent building houses a craft and gift shop, taproom, small lounge area, and an attractive dining room.

Today you can still enjoy the amazing views and refreshing mountain breezes, even while dining on delicious regional fare or at one of the Shenandoah Seasonings Culinary events. You can also hike, horseback ride, or simply relax and take in the peaceful surroundings at the Skyland Resort in Shenandoah National Park. The Pollock Dining Room serves breakfast 7:30 to 10:30am, lunch 12 noon to 2:00pm and dinner 5:30 to 9:00pm.

Big Meadows Lodge – Milepost 51

Big Meadows Lodge (milepost 51), which consists of a main lodge plus five cabins and six one- and two-story buildings. Unlike Skyland, Big Meadows is relatively compact, allowing guests an easy walk from any of the rooms to the main lodge where the dining room is located. The least expensive accommodations are 25 relatively small rooms in the main lodge that was constructed in 1939. Most rooms at Big Meadows are in a series of six lodge buildings, two of which (Doubletop and Rapidian) were remodeled in 2007 with new furniture, air conditioning, and simulated wood floors. Rooms in these two buildings each have a private patio or balcony offering good valley views. Ten cabins are in five duplex buildings that sit in a grassy area near the main lodge.

Big Meadows Lodge is named for a large grassy meadow near the lodge where deer often graze.The main lodge was built with stones cut from the Massanutten Mountain in 1939 by the CCC and mountain laborers. The interior structure of the lodge, including the paneling, is made from native chestnut trees, which are now virtually extinct.

The Spottswood Dining Room, New Market Taproom and Craft Shop are located in the main lodge building. The New Market Taproom offers a lighter fare menu plus nightly family-friendly entertainment free to all Park guests. The Spottswood Dining Room serves breakfast 7:30 to 10:00am, lunch noon to 2:00pm, and dinner 5:30 to 9:00pm.

The main lodge has 29 cozy, little rooms and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on April 28, 1997. The Main Lodge along with five cabins and six multi-unit buildings – located within a short walking distance of the lodge – sit on approximately 10 acres of Park land. There are a variety of lodging options to choose from.

Byrd Visitor Center is located one mile from the lodge and tells the unique story of Shenandoah through exhibits, displays and film.

Lewis Mountain Cabins – Milepost 57.5

Lewis Mountain Cabins (milepost 57.5), which is one of the smallest lodging units of any national park unit. A small registration building with limited groceries, seven one-story rustic cabins with nine lodging units, and one hikers’ cabin, and that’s it. Each cabin at Lewis Mountain enjoys a private bathroom and has a small front porch, but no indoor cooking facilities. An outdoor picnic pavilion with a table and barbecue pit is at each cabin. Guests should bring whatever food will be needed because the store sells only the bare essentials.

Lewis Mountain developed area is listed on the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places. Get in touch with nature in these historic furnished cabins – our guests love their rustic charm and setting.

The absence of in-room phones and internet access only adds to the total tranquility. Cabins are open April 9 – Nov. 7, 2010.

along with one tent cabin for the rugged hiker seeking shelter for the night.

Slow down the pace as you cook out on your sheltered outdoor charcoal fire, dine on your own picnic table with songbirds providing dinner music.
