History of The Plains VA

The Sioux Indians maintained a hunting ground in the Plains area until 1722. Now the area has post and rail fences, stonewalls dividing the large farms. The town was named from Nanthaniel Chapman as the Plains in 1949,

One of the first Union camps in the Civil War was setup nearby in 1862. The five story Beverly’s Mill was used to defend the pass with sharpshooters both Union and Confederate.
