Hayesville is a small town located on the western edge of the North Carolina Mountains, near Lake Chatuge. Hayesville is the ideal small charming town due to its cool climate, surrounding mountains, panoramic views and lake activities. Hayesville offers many outdoor things to do such as a marina, horseback riding, casual dining restaurants, golf courses, cabin rentals, arts and crafts, and much more.
History of Hayesville NC
The town of Hayesville was named after George Hayes in 1860 who after winning the county election separated Hayesville from Cherokee County and formed their own county seat in the newly formed Clay County.
Hayesville occupies the site of the former Cherokee town of Quanassee, which lay along the Trading Path (also called the “Unicoi Turnpike”). The road led from Quanassee west to present-day Murphy, North Carolina, then over the Unicoi Range at Unicoi Gap and down to the Cherokee town of Great Tellico (today Tellico Plains, Tennessee).
